After success earlier this year in New Delhi, England’s Andy Turner is hoping to inspire the next crop of British Olympians.

The Commonwealth Games Champion not only has his sights firmly set on making the GB Team at London 2012, but to also ensure Britain has one of its strongest teams in Olympic history at London, he is working hard to help others follow in his footsteps.

On Wednesday, Andy teamed up with former Olympic Champion Jonathan Edwards and the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes programme to give nine aspiring British athletes a taste of what it’s like to compete at the highest level. As well as gaining valuable insight from Andy and Jonathan on what to expect from a home Games, the up and coming athletes will learn about the London 2012 venues and how to best prepare mentally and physically for the challenge. They also got their first behind the scenes experience of the Olympic Park in Stratford.

The nine Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls, part of the Lloyds TSB Local Heroes programme, were selected to attend based on significant steps and progress made in their training and professional sporting careers over the last six months. Criteria included selection and performance at senior international competitions and for the England, Scotland and Wales squads for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

One Local Hero who has already tasted international success, Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist Georgina Geikie, says the Local Heroes programme is much more than just financial support and believes opportunities to learn from already established athletes are “invaluable”.

The nine rising sporting stars are among 300 talented athletes supported by Lloyds TSB this year as part of their Local Heroes programme – which in partnership with SportsAid, provides funding to help more British talent reach the top of their sports, as well as ongoing mentoring sessions and workshops with former British Olympians.
