Generations For Peace Initiative Grows On World Stage

Nine New Nations Sign Up For Generations For Peace: Camp 08, A Pioneering Certification Programme For Conflict Resolution Amongst Youth Leaders

Amman, Jordan: The second annual Generations for Peace initiative closes its 2008 camp today. Founded by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan, Generations For Peace uses sport as a vehicle for peace building in divided communities.

The camp brought together 70 youth leaders from Asian, African, Mid Eastern countries troubled by conflict, including Jordan, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Palestine, Lebanon and Afghanistan, who participated in Camp 07; and newcomers Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Lesotho, Togo, Cote D’Ivoire and Liberia.

The participants shared their experiences of conflict including children forced to fight wars, widespread abuse of women and children and deep community division. They were able to support each other in developing ideas that will help change their societies when they return home tomorrow.

The Peace Pioneer Certification Programme was delivered during the Camp by leading international and local peace education experts and sport coaches. It is composed of four key modules which focus on the roles Peace Pioneers will undertake within their communities: Peace Building; instructing children; training of trainers; and Advocacy for Generations For Peace. They received sport training, rules and teaching skills in six sports: Softball, Athletics, Football, Volleyball, Basketball and Table Tennis.

The 2009 Generations For Peace camp will be held in Abu Dhabi early next year, following the announcement of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister, as a Founding Partner of Generations For Peace.
